What Is Apple Cider Vinegar?

Apple cider vinegar, also known as ACV, is a type of vinegar made with crushed fermented apples, yeast, and sugar. The juice is drained and used for a variety of purposes from recipes to cleaning agents.

Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has been used for centuries in recipes and natural home remedies. However, scientific evidence is still limited to short-term studies.

So far, findings do not correlate to long-term results for specific health conditions and cannot be stated as absolute facts. However, some of the most common uses for ACV are to:

  • Assist with weight loss – A few scientific studies have shown that consuming ACV can contribute to feelings of fullness, helping people lose weight.
  • Reduce cholesterol – A 2021 review found that the consumption of ACV in humans may benefit total cholesterol levels.
  • Lower blood sugar levels and improve symptoms of diabetes – Several studies have shown that consuming ACV can help improve blood sugar levels. However, a 2019 clinical trial directly suggested that apple cider vinegar positively impacts glycemic index and oxidative stress in individuals with diabetes and dyslipidemia. This can be particularly helpful for people with type 2 diabetes.

The presence of acetic acid in ACV is thought to be a contributing factor to many of its perceived benefits. However, acetic acid is present in other types of vinegar as well, meaning evidence is not conclusive.

What Are the Disadvantages of Apple Cider Vinegar?

While there are believed to be several benefits of apple cider vinegar, there are a few potential downsides or side effects, too.

For example, consuming apple cider vinegar can:

  • Cause indigestion and acid reflux, because it is highly acidic
  • Lower potassium levels
  • Erode tooth enamel
  • Cause skin and throat burns
  • Interact with certain medications

Be sure to consult a doctor with any specific questions or concerns!
