As our dependence on technology continues to climb, our exposure to harmful electromagnetic pollutants increases. We’ve all heard that pregnant women should use caution when operating a microwave oven, but I have learned that many other devices emit electromagnetic energy. I’ve spent some time researching some of the best and most affordable ways to protect you, your family, and your home.

EMF means electromagnetic field. EMFs are invisible lines of energy that radiate from all electrical devices. This includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and wireless technology. Another word for the energy EMFs emit is, well, radiation. But that word can be super scary. There are two different levels of EMF energy:

  • Non-ionizing energy is low-level and generally considered “harmless” to humans.
  • Ionizing is high-level and can cause damage to human cells.

So, while microwave ovens, computers, and cellular devices emit non-ionizing energy, you are probably exposed to this energy a lot during the day. Think about how often you use your computer, turn on your Bluetooth speaker, or scroll through your phone. The exposure adds up.

EMF exposure poses serious health risks, including an increased risk of cancer, decreased fertility, an increased risk of neurodegenerative disease, increased risk of heart disease, decreased mental performance, insomnia, headaches, skin aging, and more. EMFs are even more dangerous to children because they are smaller, and their brains are still developing.

Don’t fret, though; there are plenty of ways you can reduce your and your family’s EMF exposure through EMF blocking (and taking a few breaks here and there).

Ways to Reduce Your EMF Exposure

Keep your laptop off your lap. While laptops were meant for computer operation on the go, you should keep your laptop off your lap. These handy devices emit a great deal of EMF. Consider purchasing a shield to use under your laptop or always use your laptop when it is on a desk, counter, or tray table.

Eliminate smart meters. Technology is fantastic, but smart meters used to help save energy emit tons of EMF. So, while you may be saving money with your smart meter, you could be harming your health in a big way.

Stock up on salt lamps. Himalayan salt lamps have plenty of healing properties, and they are beautiful. These salt lamps also help neutralize EMF energy in the atmosphere.

Limit cell phone to skin exposure. The speakerphone is a much better option when appropriate. Consider using the speakerphone instead of clutching your cell phone to your ear with your cheek nestled tightly against the screen. Take breaks from your phone when possible. I know we can rely on our phones a lot, not just to talk to others but also to view emails, watch videos, check social media, and more. You may also want to purchase a specialized case for your devices. These protective cases protect you from EMF while preserving the functionality of your device. I have them on all my devices.

Adopt airplane mode. That handy airplane icon on your phone is not just for when you’re sitting on a plane! Whenever you’re not using your Wi-Fi capabilities on your phone or tablet, switch on Airplane mode. This pauses EMF emissions, helping reduce your exposure.

Keep where you eat and sleep a wireless-free sanctuary. We spend a lot of time sleeping in the bedroom or preparing meals in the kitchen. To increase your protection from EMF at home, try your best to keep wireless devices out of those highly used and inhabited spaces.

Turn off Wi-Fi before bed. Another great tip to enhance your EMF blocking is to power down your Wi-Fi before bed. Not only can this save you some money and give your Wi-Fi a much-needed break, but it can also help you sleep a little better since the Wi-Fi isn’t actively releasing EMF energy. We use a Christmas tree timer to shut ours off at night.

Watch your wearables. If you have a fitness tracker or smartwatch, there is a good chance they are connected to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. To track your steps, consider a traditional pedometer. While not as technologically advanced, it will not emit EMF energy directly into your skin throughout the day.

Practice earthing or grounding. This is simply the practice of putting your bare feet on the ground so that you can absorb the Earth’s electrons. Electrons are negatively charged, so this helps you cancel out EMF exposure and restore a sense of balance.

Magnesium is your friend. I swear by magnesium. I even make my own magnesium oil. Magnesium is an excellent natural calcium-channel blocker. This means that if your diet has plenty of magnesium, you are also benefitting from the nutrient’s EMF blocking properties.

Opt to air dry your hair. Your blow dryer emits more EMFs than your microwave. Sometimes you’re going to need to blow dry your hair in a pinch, and that is okay. But whenever possible, try to air dry your hair or even enjoy natural dry shampoo.

Adopt some plants. Incorporating beautiful, lively, green plants throughout your home is excellent for mental and physical health. Plants are amazing. They can absorb toxins through their leaves and filter the air throughout your home. Some great options include cactus, aloe, and peace lily. Cactus and aloe are pretty low-maintenance plants as well, so even if you do not have a green thumb, you should be able to care for them with ease.

Wires when possible. Corded phones are preferable over cordless ones. The same goes for baby monitors. Even though wireless baby monitors are convenient and portable, they emit EMF energy. Monitors that plug into the wall are a much safer bet. Same goes with Bluetooth ear buds, stick to the wired buds.

Device distance. Leave your cell phone at least three feet away from your desk, bed, chair, or anywhere you spend a lot of time. This keeps you from being in the direct line, so you absorb the EMFs.  This will help you unplug more, which is excellent for your mental health.

Ten Feet from the TV. Sit at least 10 feet away from your television screen. The bigger the screen, and boy are they big these days, the further away you should sit.

By practicing these tips, you can eliminate your EMF exposure and protect your family and home from any dirty energy. I know many devices are necessary for daily life, but by taking the proper precautions and being aware of what devices emit EMF energy, you are taking steps to live a healthier life.
