I grew up thinking that onion soup mix had magical powers. It transformed plain old sour cream into something that made me want to eat raw broccoli by the pound, it made casseroles have the most amazing flavor, it even tasted good just added to water (when I was a starving college student).
Well, over the years I have come to look deeper into the foods that I eat, especially when they come from a box or small white envelope. Alas, my magical onion soup mix was not so magical. It was full of the flavor enhancer MSG. Aw man! Just look at this ingredient list…
MSG is actually listed a few times, under different names. Plus, caramel color, corn syrup, and soybean oil? No, thanks! I think I will just make my own homemade onion soup mix. So I did.
Homemade Onion Soup Mix
Ditch the junk from the store-bought mixes and just make your own homemade onion soup mix. It tastes so much better too!
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup dry onion flakes
- 2 tsp sea salt
- 2 tsp celery seed powder
- 2 tsp paprika
- 2 tsp turmeric powder
- 2 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp dried parsley
- 1 tsp coconut sugar
Instructions
1. Measure all ingredients into a bowl and mix well with a fork or whisk.
2. Pour into an airtight glass jar (like this).
3. Use in place of the commercial onion soup mix in your recipes.

How much is in packet?
Can you use minced onions, found on the spice aisle in place of the dried onion flakes?
As long as they are dried, those should be the same thing. So yes 🙂
My mom had a low sodium when my dad got high blood pressure, I sadly I never got the recipe this should be close. I know she didn't use coconut sugar. But I am going to try it.
I have a question regarding this recipe ho much do you use for a recipe calling for a packet of onion soup mix?
Thanks, Linda
I would say 2-3 Tbsps
Can you use regular sugar?
Sure 🙂 Pick cane sugar if you can, the rest is usually made from GMO beets
I’m surprised there’s no need for some beef boulion? I admit that I just wrote your recipe down and have not tried it yet; however, I didn’t want to go buy some of the ingredients you listed until I questioned you regarding the boulion.
Thank you for your time,
Kathie Birge
Hi Kathie, most bullion contains MSG so I don’t ever use it in my recipes.
Make your own soup stock. Boil it down. Put it in a dehydrator or oven on low. It solidifies and you get your own bullion. It’s in Sally Fallon’s book about soup stock & there are demonstrations on the internet.
I am anxious to try this and pass it on to my grown health conscious children. Instead of boulion why not use organic beef broth if you are using it for soup or homemade stew.
Hellow, Do you have a dry
Jamaican jerk rub recipe
Not yet, but that’s a good one to come up with!
